Warwick’s Chain Smoker Biomechanical Sleeve: A First Tattoo Built Around a Custom Truck

Some clients start with a small tattoo to test the process. Warwick chose a completely different route.
He travelled from Canada for his first tattoo and committed to a full biomechanical sleeve and chest project built over multiple sessions. The concept was personal from the beginning. Instead of using generic mechanical references, the tattoo was based around his own custom “Chain Smoker” truck.
The vehicle had a strong industrial character, with chains, metal panels, exposed mechanical details, rusted textures and custom-built engineering elements. It was exactly the kind of reference that can work well for biomechanical tattooing when handled properly.
The goal was not to copy the truck directly onto the body. The goal was to take the feeling of the machine and rebuild it into a tattoo that flowed naturally across the chest, shoulder and full arm.




A First Tattoo With a Full Concept
A large-scale tattoo like this needs more planning than a single-session design.
The chest, shoulder and arm all move differently. The shoulder rotates, the elbow bends, the forearm changes shape depending on position, and the chest creates a large flat area that needs to connect naturally into the sleeve.
For biomechanical tattoo work, these transitions are important. If the design is not planned correctly, the tattoo can look like separate mechanical parts placed next to each other. The aim is always to create one complete structure.
With Warwick’s project, the design needed to move from the chest into the shoulder, then continue down the arm with enough detail and depth to work as a full sleeve.


Inspiration From the Chain Smoker Truck
The Chain Smoker truck had a huge influence on the direction of the tattoo.
The reference material included chains, exposed metalwork, custom panels, mechanical components and a rough industrial finish. These elements gave the tattoo a strong identity from the start.
One of the most important parts of using real mechanical references is understanding how to adapt them. A chain, turbo, panel or engine part cannot simply be copied flat onto the skin. It needs to be reshaped so it works with the body.
The truck gave us the visual language. The body gave us the structure.





Building the Design Around Anatomy
My approach to biomechanical tattoos always starts with anatomy and flow.
The design has to follow the natural structure of the body. On an arm sleeve, this means considering the shoulder cap, triceps, biceps, elbow, forearm and wrist as connected areas.
For this piece, the chain elements helped connect the shoulder and upper arm. Mechanical panels and structural components created direction through the sleeve. Deeper engine-inspired details, cables and internal parts added contrast and depth.
The chest section added another level to the project. It allowed the design to open up with a stronger central feature before tightening into the shoulder and sleeve.




3D Design and Biomechanical Planning
For projects like this, 3D design can be very useful.
It allows me to build mechanical elements with more control before translating them into tattoo form. I can test shape, proportion, depth and direction, then adjust the design to better fit the client’s body.
The 3D stage is not about replacing tattoo design. It is part of the planning process. The final tattoo still needs to be adapted by hand to the body, skin and movement.
In Warwick’s case, the 3D elements helped create a more believable mechanical structure. The panels, chain sections, brackets and internal parts could be arranged with a stronger sense of depth before the tattooing started.
This is especially important with biomechanical realism, where the final piece needs to look engineered but still organic enough to belong to the body.
Multiple Sessions and Long-Term Commitment
A full biomechanical sleeve and chest piece is not a quick tattoo.
Warwick completed the project over multiple sessions. Each session added another stage: structure, depth, contrast, detail and final refinement.
Large-scale work requires trust between the client and artist. The client needs to understand that the tattoo may not look finished after the first stage. Some areas need to be built gradually so the whole piece comes together properly by the end.
For a first tattoo, Warwick handled the process extremely well. Travelling from Canada and committing to a project of this scale showed a lot of trust in the design and the process.
Black and Grey Biomechanical Realism With Colour Details
The final tattoo is mainly black and grey, but it includes small colour accents through the cables and internal mechanical areas.
This kind of limited colour works well in biomechanical tattoos. It keeps the overall design strong and readable while giving certain elements more energy and contrast.
The red and blue cable details help guide the eye through the tattoo without overpowering the black and grey structure. The tattoo still feels mechanical, heavy and realistic, but the colour gives it another level of detail.
Why Personal References Matter
Some of the strongest tattoos come from personal reference material.
Warwick’s Chain Smoker truck was not just a random image from the internet. It was connected to him, his interests and his own world. That gave the project a stronger foundation.
Biomechanical tattoos are often chosen by people interested in engineering, cars, motorcycles, fabrication, racing or industrial design. These interests can become part of the tattoo in a way that feels specific to the client.
A good biomechanical tattoo should not be a collection of random gears. It should feel like it was built for the person wearing it.
Final Result
Warwick’s project became a full custom biomechanical sleeve and chest tattoo with a strong automotive influence.
It combined:
- Chain details from the truck
- Mechanical panels
- Turbo-inspired structures
- Engine and industrial references
- 3D concept design
- Black and grey biomechanical realism
- Small colour cable accents
- Full body flow from chest to wrist
For a first tattoo, this was a serious commitment. But the final result shows what is possible when the idea, reference material and planning process all work together.
